...about mighty simple business strategies with Phyllis Brasenell
Meet Phyllis
Phyllis Brasenell is an over-caffeinated entrepreneur, lover of GIFs, and business and marketing strategist. Her special sauce is helping new entrepreneurs get off the ground using simple, intentional methods and in this episode we share the online strategies that will leave you feeling free from that dirty word…algorithm.
When Phyllis isn’t helping others sustainably grow their business you can find her on the front porch of her 3 acres in Georgetown desperately missing Austin breakfast tacos. And of course we talk about how to craft the best breakfast taco, so be sure to stick around until the end and subscribe to the podcast on your favourite media player!

Here are a few of Phyllis’ top tips:
Build on land you own, not land you rent.
when building on online following, be sure to stay focused on building your email or mailing lists instead of obsessing over follower count and likes. An email list you own, but Facebook could shut you down in a heartbeat, or even start charging businesses weekly rates for having pages, the point is building your following on a social account and not taking any client data for your own records is like playing Russian roulette with your business success.
Ask other business owners how they got their first customer…
…or their most recent customer. You’ll be surprised to hear the answer most often than not is through a word of mouth referral. In Phyllis’ case, it seems every business owner she asked gave this answer and I totally believe it. Yes a personal recommendation can be an @ mention on Twitter or Instagram, but consider how many of those times it’s paid out for those fan pages…I know for my own stats, the @ mention has yet to bring me anything more than a one-off client.
Follow a simple framework for marketing
Even better if you can leverage a seasoned pro in your field who can help you go through the steps you need to take you business from a great idea to a great business without investing unnecessary hours in online social sites creating the content you think you need to have. Phyllis has a wicked awesome free guide called the Workweek Simplified Guide that you can get here, and if you are looking for a mentor and an online business, let’s chat.
